BEIJING – Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.42 percent, at 3,236.7 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.65 percent lower at 11,972.02 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 922.98 billion yuan ($145 billion), shrinking from 966.1 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares of cement and fertilizer manufacturers were among the top gainers, while shares of real estate developers led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.1 percent to close at 2,578.53 points Thursday.
