The company predicted that each transaction will result in 30 percent less carbon emissions compared with last year’s festival.

“We believe that the behavioral change is essential to ensuring a sustainable future, which is why as the creator and leader of the double-eleven festival, Alibaba aims to play an important role in driving those positive changes,” Tung said.

An Xin, who is in charge of marketing for the festival, added that the festival will cater to the preference of the Generation Z community, supplying myriad homegrown fashion brands. There will also be senior-friendly shopping venues for older shoppers.

Tmall Global General Manager Maggie Liu said that through the cross-border shopping event, Alibaba strives to help international brands and merchants make inroads into the Chinese market against the unfavorable climate of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to inspire overseas sellers to localize their products so that they can foster a large fan base in China.
